Summmer Solstice Workshop — Dōr. + Ruda x GF Smith x Moebe

our collaboration —

with Rùda.

On monday and tuesday last week — we welcomed our close friends and talented artists Phillippa Henley and Shaun Fagan from the creative umbrella that is Rùda (more about Rùda bellow), into our space at Dōr.

When we first conceived the idea of hosting a workshop, it was during the bleakest part of winter, when the days felt short and cold.

As we searched for inspiration on how to mark our very first workshop, envisioning the best way to champion a day dedicated to printmaking and collage work — the Summer Solstice is where our minds went.

This was the very first in what will become a carefully curated series of workshops together, each thoughtfully designed to inspire artistry and foster meaningful connections within our community.

Reflecting on the day and our shared experience — Drawing inspiration from the vibrant, flourishing summer garden, we immersed ourselves in the meticulous art of creating linocut relief prints.

Working with the extensive and exquisite range of papers provided by GF Smith, whose exceptional quality lent a tactile depth and richness to every single piece, the creative process became truly immersive.

Shaun and Phillippa expertly guided everyone through each step of this artistic journey: beginning with the initial design and delicate carving of the linoleum blocks, moving through the inking process and culminating in the operation of the printing press to effortlessly bring each unique carving to life. We also learned the technique of pressing using a wooden spoon.

With Moebe’s sleek and elegant frames, each finished print evolved into a unique work.

This event perfectly embodied the thoughtful and deeply expressive celebration that is Midsummer, as well as reflecting the core values that the Dōr. community holds most dear — a commitment to quality, to creativity, and to meaningful, lasting connections.

Not only honouring the warmth and energy of the season but also our shared dedication to craftsmanship and purposeful living. It was, undoubtedly, a truly memorable and enriching day for everyone involved.

Finally — a heartfelt thank you to the other two close friends, Sarah Ferguson and Robbie Durham for beautifully capturing all of celebrations over the two days.

About Ruda, GF Smith and Moebe — and why we chose to collaborate with them for this project.

Rùda — Established by artists Shaun and Phillippa in 2024, is a collaborative creative practice and an eagerly anticipated gallery & studio soon to open in St Boswells, nestled in the Scottish Borders.

The gallery will showcase their own remarkable works spanning sculpture, textiles, and printmaking, alongside a carefully curated selection of fine art materials, bespoke homeware, and thoughtfully chosen gifts.

The studio and workshop spaces will follow, providing a dedicated venue for an annual programme of hands-on workshops and inspiring classes designed to nurture creativity and skill.

We also wanted to include two manufacturers we have proudly partnered with from the very beginning. At Dōr., connecting customers with the origins of our products is central to our ethos. With that in mind GF Smith and Moebe are a perfect example of this kind.

The design choices in this project are intentional, inviting users to engage with the story behind each company. By exposing this material, the design element not only honours the material’s origins but also encourages users to reflect on the material’s life cycle, from spent recycled materials to valued objects.

GF Smith is a independent company, deeply built on the strength of its people and enduring partnerships.

Rooted firmly in Hull, they cherish their community spirit and have launched the GF Smith Charitable Trust, a meaningful initiative dedicated to connecting local youth with inspiring creative careers and opportunities.

As a certified B Corp, sustainability is at the forefront of everything they do, offering a diverse and carefully curated range of papers made from recycled materials, while continuously innovating to protect and preserve our planet for future generations.

At GF Smith, the well-being of both people and the environment remains at the very heart of their mission and values, driving every decision they make.

With Moebe — MOEBE is a design studio focused on creating consciously made furniture and lifestyle objects, each crafted with great attention to detail and designed to last a lifetime.

It’s that simple and beautifully intentional. Formed in 2014 by architects Martin de Neergard Christensen, Nicholas Oldroyd, and cabinet maker Anders Thams, they develop all of their designs from their studio workshop located on the island of Amager in Copenhagen.

With each creation, Moebe aims to deliver intelligently constructed, high-quality pieces that not only function seamlessly and look stunning, but also encourage people to embrace life with fewer distractions.

They inspire a growing movement of people who value honesty, simplification, and the mindful choice of less.
